Rare Viral Disease ‘Monkeypox’ Breaks Out In Bayelsa, 10 Persons Under Surveillance
The people of Bayelsa State in Southern Nigeria have been thrown into panic over the breakout of a viral epidemic 'monkeypox'.
World Health Organization (WHO) says “The monkeypox virus can cause a fatal illness in humans and, although it is similar to human smallpox which has been eradicated, it is much milder. ”
According to very reliable reports about 10 person and a medical doctor have been infected with the disease, monkeypox. They have been kept under quarantine at Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.
Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and epidemiological team are in search of about 49 persons believed to have come in contact with infected persons.
The monkeypox epidemic breakout in Bayelsa State has been authoritatively confirmed by Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu, the Commissioner for Health.
