Nasarawa governor’s aide assassinated

Gunmen struck in Nasarawa State early yesterday, killing Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura’s head driver, Abdullahi Oze­gya Mairuwa. The late Mairuwa, who was in charge of all driv­ers attached to Government House, Lafia, was travelling to his hometown in Keana Local Government Area in company with his wife, Sala­matu Abdullahi, when they were waylaid and the hus­band killed close to Tudun Adabu area of the state about 8.30 am. It was gathered that the late Mairuwa was shot at close range in front of his wife. Family sources told news­men that the assassins told his wife not to panic as they were only after her husband before shooting him twice in the chest. Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Rela­tions Officer, PPRO Umar Ismaila Numan said the po­lice had launched investiga­tion into the killing. “We are aware and have mobilized to the scene to re­cover the corpse and we have already commenced investi­gation into the incident,” Mr. Numan said. The remains of the late head driver were said to have been moved to Keana, his hometown. Sympathizers from Lafia and its environs have been trickling into the community to condole with the deceased’s family. The Nasarawa southern senatorial district has been engulfed in crisis for a while now, and despite the visible presence of security men in the area, tension continues to build-up amid recurring vio­lent attacks.
